Your work possess a delicate sense of childhood whimsy yet it sometimes casts a dark and somewhat melancholy shadow. Where do you think this feeling stems from? Is it important that your creations leave an emotional imprint on your audience even if their literal meaning is undefined?

I like to leave the interpretation open to the viewer.

Each person will have their own ideas and interpretations which is sometimes better than me trying to impose a specific meaning. My drawings and paintings are a mix of fantasy based imagery mixed with the reality of science that is sometimes overwhelming, amazing and beautiful but which also confirms the possible depressing future of the planet.

4274637705_b2a08159ef_oYour illustrative style has a storybook quality to it. Growing up what were some of the books that made a lasting impression upon your creative imagination?

I guess all books made some form of impression on me. Growing up in the early 80s cartoon such as Voltron, Battle of the Planets, He-Man and Ulysses 31.

I think I enjoyed making up my own adventures based on these characters while waiting all week until the next 30 minute installment. I like the idea of creative narrative in a single image.

.Have you ever thought about translating your work into animation? What would a Ghostpatrol cartoon be like?

I’d love to do animation. I’ve played around a little bit this year, by hand drawing cells and

making them into animated gifs.

I’m a huge anime fan but i think Id prefer to have my work animated in a hand drawn messy watercolour aesthetic.

Anything that results in producing action figure toys is very motivational. I guess it comes down to finding the right people to work with.

1421165573_17cdcd051bThere’s a beguiling intimacy to your work… is it hard to recreate this in the sterile confines of the traditional gallery space? How do you maintain that sense of wonder when you exhibit to the established art market?

I like to experiment with different mediums and ways of presenting my work.  I like building temporary elements in the gallery and encouraging interaction, which is something I’d like to explore more and execute on a bigger scale.

It’s also great fun to put my work on the street, to give it away and make it work within a specific space and leave it to the elements to reclaim my creations
